Process
We were tasked with redesigning NEI’s website. We took a phased approach to this redesign. First we worked within the initial structure to create what we referred to as the “make-up and mascara” phase. This increased usability of the website and gave it a slightly more modern and clean feel while we did a complete overhaul.

The design process involved:
- familiarizing ourselves with any National Institute of Health (NIH) requirements or guidelines since they are a parent organization to NEI
- understanding the complex needs of users with a full spectrum of vision abilities and conditions
- conducting a design scan of top websites for health, eye health, NEI partners, eye-focused corporations, and sites with mega menus
- coming up with 2-3 distinct design directions for the website
- doing several rounds of user-testing with a diverse group of individuals including folks with low vision and various eye conditions and making revisions based on that
- working closely with developers to ensure the design was adaptable to the additional accessibility features we implemented to make NEI’s site go above and beyond 508-compliance
